Acquaintance Sexual Assault:
The statistics make “hidden” rape or acquaintance rape “more common than left handedness, heart attacks, or alcoholism.  These rapes are not a recent campus fad or fantasy of a few jilted females.  They are real.  And they are happening all around us,” says Robin Warshaw in I Never Called It Rape.

Females

  • 1 in 3 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime
  • 1 in 7 males will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.
  • Victimization rates were highest among women ages 15-34
  • A woman’s risk of being raped by someone she knows is 4 times greater than being raped by a stranger
  • One in 7 women reported being raped by their husband
  • An estimated 80% of all rape is date or acquaintance rape
  • Based on police reports, 16 rapes are attempted and 10 women are raped every hour
  • Fifty two percent of men convicted of rape will be re-arrested again within 3 years
  • In one study, 89 rapists attempted and completed 744 rapes of 657 victims with an average number of victims per offender at 7.5.
